The World Heritage List

The United Nations organization UNESCO seeks to encourage the identification, protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritage around the world considered to be of outstanding value to humanity. The World Heritage List includes 878 sites (2008) that the World Heritage Committee considers as having outstanding universal value. These include 679 cultural, 174 natural and 25 mixed sites in 145 countries. The number of sites on the World Heritge list grows annually.

At present there are six cultural heritage sites in Finland. The decision to accept the Kvarken Archipelago as the first natural heritage in Finland was made by the World Heritage Committee during its annual meeting on 9-16 July 2006 in Vilnius, Lithuania.
